EVERNOTE DATA USAGE

In order to function properly, Evernote needs access to several different software components and services, some of which contain private user information. The purpose of this article is to describe what data is used by Evernote and specifically how the data is used.
When users install, modify, or use an Evernote application, they may see permission requests or alerts regarding all of the device capabilities an application could potentially use. For example, Android users will see a long, generic, technical list of device capabilities upon installation of an app, while iOS users will see device permission requests pop up as they use an application. Rather than list such permissions exhaustively, this article describes how each Evernote application uses key device features that may access or use private user information.

ALL EVERNOTE APPLICATIONS
HARDWARE IDENTITY: Evernote looks up your device's unique hardware identifiers (IMEI, SIM number or other identifier) and description. Evernote stores this on our servers in order to:
allow you to review and revoke devices from Account Settings > Applications
enable promotional account upgrades
calculate anonymous aggregate statistics on the number of unique devices accessing the Evernote service
EVERNOTE ANDROID
CONTACT DATA: This is used to allow the Android application to access your contact list in order to autocomplete email addresses when you email a note.
SENSITIVE LOG DATA: This is used to help improve the product if you encounter a problem. For example, if the application crashes, you can select "Send logs" from the "Settings" screen. This will attach a log file to an email message. You can always review the contents before sending them to Evernote Support.
KNOWN ACCOUNTS: This is used to ease Evernote account creation by pre-filling the email address field on the registration form. Evernote will only store your email address once and submit it as part of the registration process.
ACCOUNTS: Evernote account details are sent to and read from your Android Account manager so you can manage the account easily. With your permission, other applications may also connect to your Evernote account.
SYNC SETTINGS: Evernote allows user to control Evernote sync settings from Android's Account manager.
CALENDAR EVENTS: This information is used to automatically provide note titles based on calendar events (as well as location data).
LOCATION SERVICES: Location Services are used to determine the device's current location so that it can be attached to new notes. It is also used when plotting one or more notes in the map view and is used to provide additional information for automatic note titles.
CAMERA: The first time a user starts to record a photo note, he/she will be prompted to allow Evernote access to the device's camera application. This permission is stored to allow Evernote to capture photos from this device without prompting in the future.
EVERNOTE IOS
CONTACT DATA: The contact list is read when the user attempts to share a note via email so email addresses can be autocompleted as they are typed. The contact list is also combed for data to assist in the automatic note title feature.
CALENDAR DATA: Calendar information is used when automatically adding titles to notes.
CAMERA ROLL: The system Camera Roll is accessed when the user chooses to add a photo to a note.
LOCATION SERVICES: Location Services are used to determine the device's current location so that it can be attached to new notes. It is also used when plotting one or more notes in the map view and is used to provide additional information for automatic note titles.
EVERNOTE LOGIN CREDENTIALS: After logging into Evernote on iOS, your login credentials are stored in the system keychain. This allows you to use Evernote without having to login each time the app launches. Login information is also used to allow you to easily log in to other Evernote applications.
EVERNOTE PREMIUM CONTACT INFORMATION: If a user has a recurring Evernote Premium subscription, iOS will ask the user to allow access to store user name, email, and address contact information to provide better Customer Support.
EVERNOTE MAC
LOCATION SERVICES:The first time a user launches Evernote, he/she is prompted to give access to the user's location information. This is used to store the location where a note is created.
CAMERA: The first time a user starts to record a photo note, he/she will be prompted to allow Evernote access to the device's camera application. This permission is stored to allow Evernote to capture photos from this device without prompting in the future.

CAMERA: The system camera is accessed when the user chooses to Take a Photo so images can be used as a canvas.
SKITCH ANDROID
CAMERA: The system camera is accessed when the user chooses to Take a Photo so images can be used as a canvas.
GALLERY: When the user selects Choose a Photo, this application accesses device photos so images can be used as a canvas.
CONTACT DATA: This is used to allow the Android application to access your contact list in order to autocomplete email addresses when you email a note.
LOCATION SERVICES: Location Services: When the user selects Draw on Map, Location Services are used to determine the device's current location so the map can be used as a canvas.
EXTERNAL STORAGE: If an SD card or other external storage is connected, a user may opt to Save Image to that storage device.
OTHER INSTALLED APPLICATIONS A user can tap the Share Icon to send a Skitch Note to another application on the device. Skitch will check the list of currently installed apps and display a list of available targets for sharing.

CAMERA: The system camera is accessed when the user chooses to create a Camera Snapshot Skitch note so images can be used as a canvas.
PENULTIMATE
CAMERA ROLL: The system Camera Roll is accessed when the user chooses to add a photo to a page or to use an image as a custom paper style.
EVERNOTE LOGIN CREDENTIALS: After signing into Penultimate, your login credentials are stored in the system keychain. This allows you to send notes to Evernote without having to sign in each time.
DROPBOX AUTHENTICATION: After linking the app to your Dropbox account, an authentication token is stored to allow access to your Dropbox for sending and importing notebooks and papers, and for the optional automatic backup feature. Penultimate does not see or store your actual login credentials.
EVERNOTE WEB CLIPPER
EVERNOTE LOGIN CREDENTIALS: After logging into Evernote, your login credentials are stored in the system keychain. This allows you to use Evernote without having to login each time the app launches. Login information is also used to allow you to easily log in to other Evernote applications.
EVERNOTE HELLO ANDROID
No data is transmitted to Evernote unless the user creates that information inside the Hello application.
IMAGE GALLERY: When prompted by the user, Evernote Hello accesses the Camera Roll so that images can be used as a profile image.
CONTACT DATA: Evernote Hello makes use of the system contact list: it allows users to add new people using contact info, search the contact list as well as people already in Hello and supports saving Hello contact information back to the system contact list. Evernote does not transmit the user's entire contact list to Evernote servers. Only contact data the user selects to include in a Hello Contact is synced and stored in Evernote.

Individuals scheduled for appointments can easily be added to Evernote Hello. Evernote does not transmit the user's entire calendar appointments to Evernote servers. Only calendar information the user selects to include in a Hello Meeting is synced and stored in Evernote.
TEXT MESSAGING AND PHONE CALLS: Evernote Hello scans your text messaging and phone call logs to identify recent messages and calls for individuals so contacts can be easily be added to Evernote Hello with a shortcut.
LOCATION SERVICES: When the user creates a new Hello Contact or Meeting, Evernote Hello uses the system GPS to determine the device's current location as well as the names of known locations nearby. This allows the user to assign a name to the location where a meeting took place.
EMAIL: Evernote Hello can be configured to automatically send the owner's contact information to new people added to Hello.
SOCIAL NETWORKS: We encourage users to log into their Facebook and LinkedIn accounts in order to pre-populate new contacts' profile information.

When a new meal is begun by attaching an image, we read the information embedded in the image and use the date, time and location to determine when and where the meal took place for the user automatically.
CONTACT DATA: This is used to allow the Android application to access your contact list in order to autocomplete email addresses when you email a meal. We do not share your entire contact list with the Evernote Service; this information is used exclusively to send emails.
LOCATION SERVICES: If authorized, Evernote Food utilizes the built-in GPS service to determine the device's current location and suggest candidate restaurants and food retailers that could be used as the meal's location. If your current location isn't in the list of candidates, you can supply a custom name ("Mom's house", etc.).

When a new meal is begun by uploading an image, we read the information embedded in the image and use the date, time and location to determine when and where the meal took place for the user automatically.
CONTACT DATA: Evernote Food needs access to your contacts in order to autocomplete email addresses when you email a note. But, contact information is not sent to Evernote during this process. Evernote Food uses the native emailing functionality made available to iOS developers; this component has access to the address book, but Evernote Food never directly accesses contact data.
LOCATION SERVICES: If authorized, Evernote Food utilizes the built-in GPS service to determine the device's current location and suggest candidate restaurants and food retailers that could be used as the meal's location. If your current location isn't in the list of candidates, you can supply a custom name ("Mom's house", etc.).
RECIPE CLASSIFICATION: Evernote Food will scan all notes in the user's Evernote account to recognize and present recipes in My Cookbook.
HELP EVERNOTE: Enabling "Help Evernote" will improve automatic recipe identification by allowing Evernote to access an anonymous copy of any note you manually add as a recipe or mark as "not a recipe" in the My Cookbook section of Evernote food.
